Immediately following their five round fight Saturday night at UFC 143, many MMA fans were clamoring for Carlos Condit to immediately put his interim belt on the line against the man he just defeated in Nick Diaz.
Why? What would be the point for Condit or the welterweight division as a whole to put the division at a standstill? Allow Hurtsbad MMA one certain angle for a moment, and don’t expect another justification for Diaz vs. Condit II.
It's universally understood that the fight wasn't the stand-up toe-to-toe war that many expected. That doesn't mean that it warrants an immediate rematch by any means. Just because a fight ended in a controversial decision doesn't mean that an automatic rematch is necessary.
There was an immediate rematch between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard, but that's because there was a draw and the question at hand (who the best lightweight in the world) wasn't answered in that fight.
In this fight between Diaz and Condit, we got our answer.
Carlos Condit outsmarted, out-paced, and used counter attacks to out-last Nick Diaz. Many called his movement away from the cage “running” but that wasn't the case at all. Condit didn't want to be cornered and have to engage in a flat footed chin check contest with Nick Diaz.
Quite simply Condit played to his strengths. Greg Jackson and Condit devised a plan that would emphasis his best attributes. Their plan in execution was flawless.
Condit is a great counter striker because of the diversity of his attacks. Condit can use his hands with speed or power, and he can do the same with his kicks and knees. He doesn't favor using any particular limb or style while attacking.
Diaz on the other hand leans primarily on his boxing prowess to attack. Diaz also relies heavily on cutting off the ring and forcing his opponent into a boxing match. If Diaz closes the distance then his opponent can't get off attacks with knees or kicks, and if they're against the cage they can't dodge.
It's simple and brilliant all at the same time. Taking the Paul Daley fight as an example, Diaz took away Daley's power punches by cutting off his escape route and making the fight what he wanted it to be.
That's exactly what Condit took away. What people have to realize is not only was Condit's victory valid, it was difficult and impressive.
Defensive fighting can serve a person well especially with someone as offensive minded as Diaz. Think Pernell Whitaker in boxing or even Floyd Mayweather; defensive boxing at its finest.
This was an example of the same concept on a different platform by Condit.
At this point Diaz has to figure out how to force the action himself instead of trash talking, whining, then retiring because his opponent didn't stand in front of him and get punched in the face.
So from this writer's stand point no rematch is necessary but of course this is one opinion in a sea of perception surrounding an extremely controversial topic. But I stand by it regardless.
