mixed martial arts news
By now gamers know that the sky's the limit on what will be achieved in video games. New technology and hardware will create the most immersive gaming experiences possible. But what about MMA in video games? Does the same apply to them? The answer is simple.
YES.
With UFC Undisputed 3 launching on February 14th of this year (Hurtsbad.com will have an exclusive review of the game), it is safe to say that fight fans are in for some of the best thumb exercise in regards to their favorite sport, in recent memory.
Does MMA in video games resign itself to merely pressing buttons on a control pad though? Simply put, no. To give gamers a little bit of a different feel for the world their athletes inhabit, the UFC released an exercise game.
Using ground-breaking motion capture technology, THQ brought the ultimate interactive MMA experience right to your home.
UFC Personal Trainer allowed gamers to go through the motions of training like a mixed martial artist. Using (mostly) pin-point precision and the likenesses of noteworthy UFC fighters, fans were able to train with greats like Cain Velasquez & Urijah Faber.
The training exercises were created by real life MMA coaches too. Javier Mendez and Greg Jackson oversaw the creation process and added real life MMA workout techniques to make the game as “realistic” as possible.
The game itself runs a person through quite the strenuous task (trust me, I know) but after you're done, you do actually feel pretty good. Especially when Shane Carwin tells you that your virtual punching power rivals his real life power. (HA!)
But allowing gamers to play as or with their favorite UFC fighter isn't enough. Where would the UFC be if they didn't give the fans new ways to experience the actual product? At the E3 2011 Expo, UFC president Dana White announced a brand new application that would bring fans of the sport closer to the product than ever before.
On Dec. 20th, UFC on Xbox Live launched on Xbox 360.
This new service would allow fans to view all sorts of UFC content. From weigh-ins and countdown shows to the actual PPVs. All became accessible. Interactivity was also introduced. The app also gives fans the ability to pick the winners of upcoming UFC shows and compare it to the thoughts of their friends online.
Giving fans such access will create a brand new generation of people who'd like to learn more about the sport and the athletes therein.
But not only will MMA be physically interactive, but also continue to strive for pure gaming dominance as well. The Undisputed franchise is having new life breathed into it.
Reports say that the new game has new bells and whistles on it, more than ever before and judging from previous videos, we can surmise that this may be the best representation of the UFC in video games.
In closing, allow this gamer/fight fan to say that having witnessed the Birth and Subsequent Death of MMA in video games and then the miraculous Rebirth with UFC Undisputed and EA MMA, I look forward to seeing where we go from here. Maybe we'll even get a crossover game.
Just imagine a Street Fighter vs. UFC game.
