Jim Miller once again proved why he is one of the toughest lightweights in the world. He made short work of Melvin Guillard on Friday night, submitting him with a rear-naked choke 2:04 into the first round.
It wasn't easy getting to that point however, as Guillard dropped Miller with a powerful left hook early in the fight. The Young Assassin showed his flashy striking throughout the round, throwing kicks and flying knees at the New Jersey native.
Miller would fight on to survive the onslaught from the athletic lightweight. The flying knees that have brought Guillard so much success in the past would be his downfall in this battle, missing on one attempt which caused Miller to gain control of his opponents back.
A Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt, Miller always makes the most of gaining control of an opponents back, sinking in a forceful rear-naked choke that caused Guillard to tap out quickly.
After the bout, an emotional Miller had this to say, "It is so gratifying. All the fans and the UFC....you all probably know that my nephew is going through some hard times right now. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart and from everyone in my family. We love you guys so much. We come in here and fight as hard as we can. We really appreciate you guys. Thank you so much for your generosity."
When asked about his opponent he had nothing but respect, "I don't get knocked down often, and he knocked me down. He hits hard. There are a lot of guys, I think, in this weight class and probably the one above us who don't want to fight that kid."
Miller then shared his thoughts on the submission victory saying, "I just find a way to the back. I did something I've always been able to do. I'm pretty confident that I'm the most dangerous lightweight in the world, and I'm willing to make you guys believe that."
The AMA fight club representative moved to 21-3 with the victory, with 12 of those wins coming by way of submission. Miller thrust himself back into title contention with the gratifying victory.
In the third main card bout Josh Neer submitted dangerous kickboxer Duane "Bang" Ludwig with a vicious guillotine.
Neer started off aggressive, walking down his opponent in the octagon. Ludwig showed his potent striking, stunning the man they call "The Dentist" with a short right, following up with some cringing knees to the body.
Neer showed his toughness by surviving the blitz to drag his opponent to the ground. Having a clear advantage in the grappling department, Neer slapped on a deep guillotine choke causing Ludwig to black out before he could tap out.
After the scrap Neer had this to say about the choke, "It's one of my favorite chokes. It's just a guillotine, basically. I got his neck with no arm in, and I finished it. It was a good win. I wanted to stand up and trade more, but he was getting the better of me, and I wanted to take it to the ground and try to finish him. I don't like to lose and I'm going to put myself through whatever I have to put myself through to come out with the win."
UFC newcomer Jared Papazian showed loads of promise in his debut against Mike Easton. Papazian came through with same wicked elbows and uppercuts to stun his opponent in the first round.
The second round showed a change of events however, as Easton landed a takedown that led to him gaining side control of his opponent. Papazian would need a strong third round to steal the fight on the scorecards. He threw everything he had at his opponent, landing a number of shots.
Easton would answer right back however, with punches of his own, doing enough in the judges eyes to take a hard fought Unanimous Decision. Easton shared some words after the back and forth fight,
"He's a tough dude, I knew he was going to be tough and come to show up. All I wanted to do is give something to the fans, and we rapped. We fought hard tonight. We're the bantamweights baby. It's nothing but nonstop action. That's what we do, and we love to fight."
Easton also had this to say, " We're going all the way, I still have things I need to work on and get better at, and that's what I'm going to do."
Fan favorite Pat Barry once again proved why he is a force in the Heavyweight division. Christian Morecraft showed improved grappling skills, getting Barry to the ground on two occasions in the opening frame.
Morecraft, a Team Bombsquad representative, tried to make the most of his opportunity, gaining the mount twice. Once he got to this position, he threatened Barry with a rear-naked choke, an arm-triangle choke, and a wicked armbar which Barry countered beautifully.
Shortly after getting back to his feet, Barry slipped a strike from his giant opponent, and landed a flawless left hook that dropped Morecraft. Following up with unanswered punches, the ref stepped in to call an end to the Heavyweight affair.
Barry took the knockout victory 3:38 into the first round. A visibly pumped up Pat Barry had this to say after the bout, "I'm sorry that it took me nine getting choked out experiences in order to make that happen, my bad. Every fight is the biggest fight. I'm HD, My confidence is always through the roof. Every time I step in here, I try to put on a show for everybody because we're entertainers. I hope y'all enjoyed that."
The victory was an important one, moving Barry's UFC record to 4-4.
It was a fabulous night of fights. Lots of finishes and hardfought decisions. I enjoyed the card and can't wait to see these athletes fight again.
